Sanitary Manhole Repair
Aurora Water conducted routine inspections and identified hydrogen sulfide damage and concrete corrosion in several manholes within a sanitary sewer system installed in the 1950s. Over time, hydrogen sulfide gas had caused significant deterioration, impacting the structural integrity of the infrastructure. With no record drawings available for the system, further investigations revealed that the manholes were constructed from varying materials, including precast concrete and brick.
To address these issues, Aurora Water and its engineering team determined that four manholes needed to be fully replaced, while six others required rehabilitation. The scope of work included replacing entire manhole structures as needed, installing an external drop in one location, and applying protective coatings and linings to affected areas to prevent further corrosion. These efforts were carefully designed to ensure the restored manholes could withstand future exposure to corrosive conditions while maintaining the overall functionality of the system.
Value engineering was implemented by designing and installing a temporary manhole to bypass services not depicted in the original drawings or specifications. This solution allowed for uninterrupted sewer service during construction and minimized disruptions to the surrounding area.
